KY KeenYouth Research

Program overview

A structured pathway for original student research.

KeenYouth combines project supervision, discipline-specific academic guidance and competition preparation around one student-led project.

Program overview · Updated July 24, 2026

Core principle: mentors guide feasibility, research quality, ethics and communication; the student must understand, make decisions and own the work.

The five stages

  1. Ability assessment: discuss interests, academic foundation, past experience and research readiness.
  2. Topic selection: define a focused question, scope, method and proposal before execution.
  3. Implementation: conduct experiments, surveys, engineering builds or data analysis with documented milestones.
  4. Paper and defense: organize evidence, limitations, writing, display materials and mock judging responses.
  5. Competition submission: prepare materials for the student’s eligible regional, national or international pathway.

Three mentor roles

Chief project mentor

Coordinates research direction, innovation angle, feasibility and milestones.

Academic mentor

Guides discipline knowledge, methods, data analysis and writing.

Competition coach

Supports display design, presentation strategy, mock judging and submission readiness.

Student researcher

Owns decisions, documentation, analysis, writing and explanation of the final work.

What families should expect

A realistic project scope depends on grade, available time, safety, facilities and competition eligibility. No responsible mentorship program can guarantee a particular award. Families should evaluate progress through research quality, student understanding and completed evidence.
